On Tuesday April 28th, 2009 the "We're All In This Together" Community Forum explored the effects of the recession on individuals, communities and organizations; the strategies that have been employed to address them; and future directions.

This was the situation in April 2009 that inspired the forum:

“Food bank use in the GTA has increased by 15% in the first three months of 2009 and this has no where to go but up,” says the Daily Bread Food Bank's Gail Nyberg.  "Every day we see more and more people finding themselves out of work and struggling to make ends meet. This sharp increase of people facing hunger is stretching our distribution network and placing strain on our neighbourhood food banks across the city.”

The impact of the recession is being felt throughout the country and communities are organizing to address the many challenges it has wrought. Unemployment levels are rising and many people who have lost their jobs can’t collect employment insurance. In February 2009, welfare roles in Ontario reached an eleven year high. Eviction levels are up. The numbers of homeless are up. Pensioners are threatened with poverty. Foundations that fund not-for-profit organizations have lost 30-40% of their investments, and private donations to not-for-profits are down. In sum, the social safety net we have all relied on is in tatters while more people have need of it.
